A file assembled from different sources is almost always inconsistent: a contract exported as A4, a scanned appendix that is slightly larger, an invoice received in Letter, a diagram produced in A3. On screen nobody notices, but the moment you print it the result falls apart: the printer shrinks some pages, shifts others, margins no longer line up and the binding eats into the text. Bringing every page back to a single size before printing or binding solves the problem in one pass.
The second classic case is switching formats between continents: an American document in US Letter (216 × 279 mm) printed as-is in Europe leaves a white band at the bottom and slightly overflows on the sides. Converting it to A4 (210 × 297 mm) makes it directly printable here. Conversely, scaling up to A3 is useful for a poster, a plan, a music score, a dense table, or simply to give a comfortable read to someone who struggles with small type.
Resizing keeps proportions strictly intact: the content of each page is scaled by a single factor, then centred in the new format. Nothing is stretched or squashed, circles stay circles and letterforms keep their shape; the difference in aspect ratio between the old and the new size simply becomes a little extra margin, distributed symmetrically. Each page's orientation is respected: a landscape page in the middle of a portrait document stays landscape. You pick a standard target size — A4, A3, Letter, Legal — or a free percentage scale when you just want to enlarge or reduce everything.
In practice, resize before assembling: bringing every piece to the same size and then combining them with the merge tool gives a far cleaner file than doing it the other way round. If enlarging inflates the file, the compress tool brings it back to a reasonable size for e-mail; and if you scaled up a scan, remember it is still an image — a pass through the ocr tool will make it searchable and selectable.
