A presentation PDF that opens in a small window, with the toolbar, the thumbnails and the desktop visible behind it, ruins the effect in the first second. By requesting full-screen on open, the document behaves like a slideshow: the first slide fills the screen, with no fiddling and no hesitation in front of an audience. The same setting is what makes a PDF usable on a reception kiosk, a waiting-room screen or a demo station.
The other modes answer equally concrete needs. A three-hundred-page manual benefits from opening on the bookmarks panel: the reader sees the table of contents immediately and knows where to go. A brochure, a magazine or a booklet reads far better in two-column display, which restores the logic of the printed spread. And an opening set to "fit to window" spares your recipient from starting out by wrestling with the zoom.
These settings are not a display trick: they are written into the document catalog, in the places the PDF specification provides — PageLayout for how pages are laid out (single column, two columns, facing pages), PageMode for what opens alongside the page (bookmarks, thumbnails, full screen) and ViewerPreferences for the rest, such as hiding the toolbar or showing the document title in the window bar. Most readers honour them, Acrobat and Preview foremost. They are preferences, though, not locks: some browser viewers apply only part of them, and the user remains free to change the view.
For the setting to make sense, keep things consistent: asking to open on the bookmarks panel assumes the document has bookmarks, which the bookmark tool can add in a few minutes. Also consider filling in the title with the metadata tool, since that is what will appear in the window bar instead of the file name, and the protect tool if distribution must be controlled. As always on pdfOutils: no account required, no watermark added, and your files are automatically deleted from the server after processing.
