Why split each PDF page in half?

This is problem number one with scanned books and magazines: laid flat on the scanner glass, an open volume produces two pages in a single image. The resulting PDF is unreadable on screen — zoom in, drag right, come back left — and hopeless on an e-reader or a phone, where every double spread becomes a tiny thumbnail. Cutting each page in two restores the document's natural pagination and finally makes it comfortable to read.

The same move works for A3 sheets: a plan, a newspaper, a music score or a brochure printed at large format that you want to bring back to two A4 pages printable on any office printer. And it solves the very common case of landscape scans that actually contain two portrait pages side by side — typically a contract, a register or a booklet digitised in a hurry by a colleague.

Vertical or horizontal cut, reading order preserved

You choose the cutting axis according to how your pages are laid out: vertical when the two pages sit side by side, horizontal when they are stacked one above the other. The cut runs through the middle of the page and the document is rebuilt in the correct reading order — left half before right half, top half before bottom half. A PDF of N pages therefore produces exactly 2N, with nothing lost or cropped beyond the cutting line.

Two tips for a clean result. First, straighten the document before cutting: if the scan is tilted or some pages are upside down, the rotate tool keeps the cut from landing crooked. Then tidy up afterwards: the delete-pages tool removes the cover, the back and the blank half-pages the split produces. For a scanned book, a final pass through the ocr tool will make the text searchable and selectable. As always on pdfOutils: no account required, no watermark added, and your files are automatically deleted from the server after processing.

Frequently asked questions

What is splitting pages in half for?

When scanning a book or magazine, the scanner often captures two facing pages on a single image. This tool cuts each page in two to restore normal pagination, page after page.

Is the reading order preserved?

Yes. With a vertical split, the left half comes before the right half; with a horizontal split, the top half comes before the bottom half. A 10-page document therefore produces 20 pages, in the right order.

Is Diviser les pages en deux really free?

Yes, this tool is 100% free with no usage limits. No sign-up, no credit card and no watermark added to your documents.

Are my PDF files safe?

Yes. Your files are processed securely and automatically deleted from our servers after processing. Nobody has access to them.
