Markdown is interpreted (GFM syntax): headings, lists, tables, quotes and code blocks are formatted before the PDF is generated.
Plain text files are paginated with readable typography and balanced margins.
Meeting notes typed in an editor, a project README, technical documentation, a logbook, a wiki extract: a huge amount of content lives in .txt or .md files nowadays. Great for writing, these formats are much less so for sharing — no pagination, rendering that depends on the editor, and a .md file that's unreadable for anyone unfamiliar with the syntax. Converting it to PDF turns it into a clean, paginated, printable document, ready to send to a client or archive.
It's especially handy for developers and technical writers: turn a CHANGELOG, an installation procedure or a report written in Markdown into a presentable deliverable, without going through Word or pasting into a word processor that would break the formatting. The text file remains your source; the PDF becomes your distribution format.
.md files are interpreted as GFM (GitHub Flavored Markdown) and genuinely typeset: headings become a visual hierarchy, bulleted and numbered lists are indented, tables are drawn with their borders, and code blocks appear in a monospaced font on a distinct background. Plain .txt files are set cleanly with a readable font and regular margins — your line breaks are preserved.
For best results, structure your Markdown with real heading levels (#, ##, ###): the PDF's hierarchy will only be clearer. After converting, the merge tool combines several documents into one, watermark stamps a "draft" or "confidential" notice, and protect locks the file with a password. As always on pdfOutils: no account required, no watermark added, and your files are automatically deleted from the server after processing.
