It is not the format you were asked for
A PDF exists to be read identically everywhere, not to be edited. As soon as you need to reuse the text, fill a table or drop in a slide, you have to get out of it. And conversely, whenever you need to send something final, you have to get into it. Both directions are covered.
- You are asked for a .docx and only have the PDF.
- You need a table without retyping it by hand.
- You want to send a document that looks the same for everyone.

Going to an editable format, the result depends entirely on where the PDF came from: born in an office suite, conversion is faithful; born in a scanner, run text recognition first or you will get a stack of images inside a Word file.

Common questions
Why is my Word conversion a mess?
Because a PDF does not store paragraphs — it stores characters at positions. The converter has to guess the structure. The more complex the layout (columns, callouts, nested tables), the rougher the reconstruction.
What about a table to Excel?
Use the CSV export, more reliable than a rebuilt .xlsx: you get cleanly separated values, and you redo the formatting in your spreadsheet.
Which image format should I pick?
JPEG for pages with photos, PNG for text and diagrams — sharp lines stay sharp, whereas JPEG surrounds them with a faint halo.
